The production of lanterns is developed from the use of fire, the invention of lamps, and the manufacture of lamps and lanterns.

The Suiren invented drilling wood to make fire, and human beings ignited a fire,

A torch is lit, and this fire, the torch, is the origin of the original lamp.

With the development of social productivity, human beings began to use the oil wax of animals, plants and minerals as lighting lamps. "Zhou Li and Si Heng's Family" contains "a major event in all countries, offering candles and candles", it can be seen that the Zhou Dynasty had candle lamps. In the Warring States Period, the manufacturing process of lamps flourished, which is expressed in Qu Yuan's "Songs of the Chu": "Blue paste Mingzhuhua copper fault". The Han Dynasty was the heyday of copper lamp making. "Xijing Miscellaneous Records" says: "When Emperor Gaozu of Han entered Xianyang Palace, Qin had five lanterns of sapphire jade, seven feet five inches high, with a panchia at the bottom, holding the lamp in his mouth, and the scales and armor would move when they were burned, and the radiance was as bright as a row of stars." In the Tang Dynasty, the Lantern Festival developed into an unprecedented lantern market. The capital "made a lamp wheel twenty feet high, dressed in brocade, decorated with gold and silver, and burned 50,000 lamps, clustered like flowers and trees". After this, lantern activities around the world are particularly popular. In the Song Dynasty, the development of lanterns reached a peak, and the styles changed a lot. "Tokyo Dream Hualu" records that the palace of Bianjing (Kaifeng) made a mountain of lights, with Puxian and Manjusri riding a lion, a white elephant and other lights.

Chinese lanterns are famous in ancient and modern times; Zigong Lantern Festival has a long-standing reputation. The industrious and intelligent people of Zigong have not only contributed the unparalleled well salt technology to the world, but also contributed the beautiful lantern craftsmanship to mankind. The New Year Lantern Festival in Zigong has a long history and distinctive features. Since the Tang Dynasty, there has been the custom of lighting lanterns in the New Year. In the Qing Dynasty, there were "Lion Lantern Market" and "Lantern Festival"; by the beginning of the 20th century, a festival of lantern festivals was gradually formed, and there were also sky lanterns, Dragon dance, lion play, lantern and other activities. As a result, it has developed into a festival that gathers the culmination of regional folk customs and traditions.

According to historical records, in the Tang and Song dynasties, Zigong area has gradually formed the custom of lighting lanterns in the New Year and displaying lantern festival colors before and after the Lantern Festival. In the Zigong area during the Tang and Song Dynasties, folk acrobatics, juggling and other performances were also performed during the New Year and Lantern Festival, when the lanterns were put on and lit, which was deeply loved by the lantern watchers. In the second year of Chunxi in the Southern Song Dynasty (1175), the famous patriotic poet Lu You once wrote in the word "Qinyuanchun" written by him: "As soon as you leave Qinlou, in the blink of an eye, the new year is near, and the lights are near", which shows that the Zigong area was at that time. It has become a customary folk activity to open and put lanterns in the Spring Festival. Of course, this is still different from the lanterns that were born. Therefore, the Tang and Song Dynasties should be the budding or initial stage of Zigong Lantern Festival.
